There is an infinite number to choose from, choosing the right fishing rod can be a difficult task, especially for casual angler who is considering taking the sport more serious. But don’t be confused because, with a little information, this decision will become much easier. When buying fishing rod, it is important to understand how it works and some of the fishing rod parts that will make your fishing activities successful. But before we proceed, let’s take a look at the two most common types of fishing rods, the spinning and baitcasting rods.

 parts of a fishing rods

Spinning rods are the kind of fishing rod with a single handle, it is designed to fit on a spinning reel, and is often used in freshwater to cast and retrieve baits and lures, while Baitcasting rods are the kind of fishing rods originally developed for huge fish and offshore fishing. Beginner fishermen often struggle to name rods individual parts or even know what makes each part important. There are different parts that made up a fishing rod. So, getting starting in the sport of fishing is easier with a solid foundation and an understanding of the fishing rod parts. Therefore, in the following paragraphs, we will take a look at some of the major parts to look out for when buying fishing rod.

Parts of a fishing pole

Blanks: These are the most important parts of a fishing pole where everything else is connected to. It comes in two or three sections slotted together. Blanks are hollow tubes, presently they are mostly made of synthetic materials such as fiberglass or graphite composites. Some come in two parts, while others come in three parts.

Butt: This is at the end of the rod; butt can be made of cork, plastic, or rubber. The rod generally held upright and the butt cap protects the rods from damage. The cap is a very important fulcrum point of a rod that is usually placed against the body to help bring in big fish.

Handle: This is also referred to as the grip. It is made of cork or wood, while others are made of PVC and other types of synthetic materials. Handle length generally depends on the size of the rod as well as the purpose it serves. For example, spinning rods don’t need long handles, while other rods need a long and sturdy handle. Surfcasters are a good example of when long-handled rods are needed. These types of rods help achieve long distance casting.

Reel Seat: This is the component of the rod where the reel is fixed to the pole. The real seat can be made of plastic or graphite with the sole purpose of preventing the reel from wobbling when reeling in a fish. A lot of fishing rod comes with these reel seats.

Windings: They are generally made of a string and other material wrapped around the rod guides to keep it attached to the rod body. Windings are usually attached with some type of glue and then coated with another material. Windings prevent the guides from being ripped off the rod and help ease friction from the line moving off and on the reel. Winnings are not very popular in the fishing industry. This is because they don’t play a key role in the performance of the rod, but rather play a supporting role. It is very important that they are finished well and strong enough to handle a variety of different pound-test lines. Those covered in enamel are often recommended.

Ferrules: These are the slight metal and plastic joints that connect the sections of the rods together. If you have a fishing rod the breaks down into two or more pieces, then ferrules are the joint where the segments of the rods join together. Ferrules are delicate and easy to damage. If the ferrules are not there to assemble the rod, you can’t put it together.

Eyes: These can also be referred to as the guides; eyes are what you run the lines through. They are generally made of brass and other materials. The most expensive kind of eye has a ceramic ring inside. This reinforces the ring itself, an additional advantage of this type of ring is that it helps with the movement of the line, whether in casting or swinging, due to its softness.

Rod Tip: The tip of the rod is sharply pointed and delicate, compare to the other part of the rod. Proper care must be taken to avoid breaking or damaging the tip, particularly for synthetic and lightweight rods, though these rods can be repaired, but it can be expensive, depending on the rod.

Tiptop: This includes the eye at the top of the rod. Every fishing rod has an eye at the top. Some are stronger, bigger, and altogether much tougher, while others are small and easily damaged. Again, that depends on the kind of rods. Coarse fishing rods are at higher risk than the durable, sea fishing type.

Guides: These are the ring that goes down the rod and it keeps the fishing line away from the rod and helps provide a smooth surface for the line to slide on. It also helps the line flow smoothly when the angler casts and retrieves.

In conclusion

Knowing how to choose the right fishing rod is not easy. There are many things to keep in mind, especially if you are buying one for the first time. The good news is that you can avoid a lot of guesswork once you know what you need for your rod. As for the rest, we hope this article solves yours.
